The comprehensive RecyClass Technology Approval rated the combination of EcoCore® with Daploy™ polypropylene (PP) as "Fully compatible with PP recycling" — the highest level of compatibility.
RecyClass Technology Approval is a pre-evaluation of a technology's compatibility with state-of-the-art recycling processes for a given waste stream, in this case, PP.

The RecyClass approval letter also stated that specific packaging, made using the EcoCore technology, can achieve the highest 'A' class Recyclability Certification if Borealis Daploy PP resin is included at 95% or above. Below this point, and above 80%, a 'B' class Recyclability Certification can also be achieved.
RecyClass Recyclability Certification is a country-specific evaluation of recyclability, and the class rating can be used on packaging to inform consumers.
The RecyClass evaluation was carried out by Proplast, an independent polymer test laboratory, for Borealis, now Borouge International*, using EcoCore foamtech cups made with optimised Daploy PP.
Commenting on the recyclability of EcoCore, Phil Gall, Bockatech Technical Director, says: "Throughout the development of our foaming technology, Borealis has helped to verify recyclability using its own facilities. Third-party verification by a well-known lab, using the respected RecyClass protocol, builds on this and shows we're in good shape to meet new regulatory standards in the EU, and around the world, as it arrives in years to come."
New legislation, such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), has been introduced to increase plastic recycling and is forcing brands and manufacturers to change their packaging. However, in the EU for example, protocols for assessing recyclability have yet to be fixed. Consequently, the difficulty businesses face is ensuring that any packaging design and manufacturing changes they need to make now are also good for the future.
"The RecyClass approval for EcoCore with Borouge International resin was the highest that can be achieved and gives businesses confidence that it's in the best possible position to meet any future requirements," says Gall.

As the foaming agent used in the EcoCore process could have adversely affected recyclability, cups used for the evaluation were deliberately formulated with a high content to test the extreme case.
Even at this elevated level of foaming agent, the results are exceptional, and clients now know that their EcoCore packaging, made with Daploy, has the best possible chance of achieving recyclability certification.
Talking about the significance of the approval for Borouge International, Peter Voortmans, Vice President Marketing Consumer Products at Borealis, now Borouge International, says: "With the ability to achieve up to 70% weight reduction and reduce cycle time, new injection moulding foaming technology is compelling for brands and manufacturers as it means less cost and plastic. Demonstrating that our resins are recyclable when used with this technology shows businesses that we are ready and waiting to supply high-quality resins when they want to make the move."
